About the collection
With this collection of works I wanted to explore my thoughts on what it is to “Adorne”. Why do we have an instinct to decorate, feather our nests and generally preen? I have always had a love of birds, so they were a natural topic for me when it came to deciding a theme to explore within. I also love that we have all those lovely words and metaphors used in the English language to describe the way we decorate that references birds, like: “preen”, “feather our nests” and “strutting”.
For these bird pieces, I researched not only the bird itself; its character traits, physical attributes and history, but also, how we as humans decorate ourselves to communicate to others where we fit in within a societies structure. How could I decorate them to show perhaps the different ways that we humans present ourselves within our communities? Within the context and approach ability of these fun and colourful birds?
I have tried to stay away from showing any judgement and to keep it purely on an observational level. Accepting them all, be they flamboyant or subdued.
Note: I have painted these birds to fit in standard shop brought frame sizes.
